Brief History of Raj Ghat:
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30th January 1948. One day after his assassination, the father of the Nation was cremated at this place. Earlier the Raj Ghat, was the name of Shahjahanabad which was a big Ghat of Old Delhi. Later on, the memorial was also named as the Raj Ghat.
The resting spots of many other leaders are also located in this area. Alick Percy-Lancaster who was the Superintendent of Horticultural Operations, Government of India, did the landscaping of the area. He was the last Englishman to hold this post. To the North of the Raj Ghat is Jawaharlal Nehru’s Samadhi and it is called as Shantivan, Close to it is the cremation site of K R Narayan who was the tenth President of the country. This spot is called as Ekta Sthal.
